SUMMARY:Memphis—Food for Thought
DESCRIPTION:Jim Bailey will talk about his novel\, The End of Healing\, and will lead discussion about Dr. Don Newman’s path to find health care that heals. Food for Thought has a long tradition of nurturing the art of conversation and civil discourse in Memphis. Initial inspiration for Food for Thought came from a cover story in the Utne Reader in 1991 about the famous gatherings hosted by Gertrude Stein in Paris. Salons at that time were incubators of provocative ideas\, the frontiers of cultural change with passionate conversation sometimes leading to passionate action. Wit\, intelligence\, charm\, and insight were prized.  Later in 1991\, Rob Sangster founded Food for Thought to nourish the art of conversation\, including spirited debates on controversial topics. We ignore the adage that discussion of religion\, sex and politics are to be avoided. Indeed\, they are frequent topics. For the first year\, meetings were held in Cybil Shepherd’s downtown loft. For more than a decade after that\, Food for Thought met in the private room at La Montagne Restaurant\, where the best of conversation\, food and wine were combined.  \n Recent guests who have guided discussions include Ted Evanoff\, CA Business Editor\, Muaricio Calvo – Director – Latino Memphis\, Dr. Scott Morris – Church Health Center\, Sen. Lee Harris\, Dr. Mark Muesse – Rhodes College\, Jim Strickland – Mayor\, Phil Trenary – Chamber of Commerce\, Jimmy Ogle – all things Memphis\, Dr. Stephen Haynes – The Last Segregated Hour\, Marc Perrusquia – investigative reporter\, Dr. Steven McKenzie – the ancient Middle East\, Dr. David Kemme – the financial crisis\, Molly Crosby – on writing\, David Waters – on religion\, Dean Steve Mulroy – elections\, MPD Director Toney Armstrong – policing Memphis\, Dr. Yasir Qadhi – Muslims in America\, a variety of scientists\, historians\, economists\, politicians\, and more. \n

SUMMARY:Memphis—Healthy City Town Hall at Novel Bookstore
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Jim Bailey is leading Healthy City Town Halls across the country to encourage people to join the movement to Reclaim Health Care that Heals. The Town Hall will get people in Memphis talking about how we can demand and get health care that truly heals for our community\, our families\, and ourselves at a price we all can afford. With all the recent debate about health reform\, Americans are eager to discover the path to reclaiming their broken healthcare system and a brighter future for America in the process. At the Healthy City Town Hall – Memphis\, our three panelists are physicians who will present their perspectives about what is really happening in health reform. They will discuss the main ways Americans can demand and get health care that truly heals. Each panelist will speak for 5-10 minutes and then Dr. Bailey will moderate a question and answer period and panel discussion. This Healthy City Town Hall will offer everyday people a way to understand the real forces driving American medicine and show them how to demand and get health care that truly heals for themselves\, their families\, and their neighbors. \nOur panelists are Dr. Jim Bailey\, Dr. Clarence Davis\, and Dr. G. Scott Morris \n \nDr. Jim Bailey is a physician  and  professor of medicine and preventive  medicine  at  the University of Tennessee Health Science Center\, where he directs  the  Center  for  Health  System  Improvement\,  cares for the sick\,  and teaches doctors in training.  His  research demonstrates how we can best improve health care for everyday Americans and appears in many peer- reviewed medical journals\, including JAMA and Annals of Internal Medicine. Dr. Bailey’s novel\, The End of Healing: A Journey through the Underworld of American Medicine\, earned a Benjamin Franklin award for popular fiction. It is scheduled for national re-release on September 18 and will be available exclusively at Novel on September 16. \n  \nDr. Clarence Davis has more than a decade of experience as a medical director or chief medical officer of managed care Medicaid insurance plans spanning from TLC to Amerigroup to Blue Cross Blue Shield blue care. He is currently the chief medical officer for Memphis Health Center\, which among his many other duties includes providing clinical care for the Ryan White HIV program and the clinical champion Patient Centered Medical Home. Additionally\, Dr. Davis is the host of the radio show\, “Improving Your Health with Dr. Clarence Davis” — now running in its seventh year. Dr. Davis will be available at the conclusion of the Healthy City Town Hall to answer questions about the path to better health. \n  \n \nDr. G. Scott Morris is the founder and CEO of Church Health\, an organization that has grown to become the largest faith-based\, privately funded primary care clinic in the country. He has an undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia\, a Master of Divinity degree from Yale University\, and M.D. from Emory University. As a board certified family practice physician and an ordained minister in the United Methodist Church\, Dr. Morris is a leader in the field of faith and health and an advocate for the poor in US society. His book God\, Health\, and Happiness shows how spiritual well-being can lead to better health. Dr. Morris and Dr. Bailey will be available to sign their books at the conclusion of the Healthy City Town Hall. \nJoin our movement to Reclaim Health Care that Heals!

SUMMARY:Memphis—Art of Science Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:The Diagram of Healthcare Hell from the The End of Healing: A Journey through the Underworld of American Medicine by Jim Bailey will be part of the Art of Science Exhibit on view in Rust Hall at Memphis College of Art (located in Overton Park\, Memphis). This is the 5th installment of The Art of Science\, an annual exhibition showcasing the beauty of science and the power of art\, presented by LeBonheur Childrens Research Hospital and Memphis College of Art.Each year\, scientific imagery provided by working research scientists & physicians at LeBonheur Childrens Research Hospital is reinterpreted by local area fine artists. The Art of Science project\, led by Dr. Heather Smallwood\, culminates in a gallery show exhibiting the original scientific images with explanations of their significance\, alongside the artistic representations. This project connects members of the city’s science and art communities\, and serves as an educational art experience that is open and free to the public. \nPlease mark your calendar and plan to attend the exhibit reception on the evening of March 2\, 2018 from 6-8 PM. A companion piece by noted artist Nysha Oren Nelson that was inspired by the diagram will be hung next adjacent to a high resolution print on aluminum of the illustration from The End of Healing. At the reception both Jim and Nysha will be available to discuss their work with the public. \n \nThe Diagram of Healthcare Hell plays a central role in The End of Healing. The novel’s young physician-protagonist\, Dr. Don Newman\, discovers that Dante’s Inferno provides a perfect ethical framework for understanding the unjust misallocation of resources in American healthcare. Inspired by Botticelli’s magnificent map of the Inferno from the late 1400s and informed by his own study of epidemiology\, biostatistics\, and health economics\, Dr. Newman draws this diagram in the back of his journal to detail the money spent\, lives saved\, and lives lost in each sector of the healthcare industry. For every type of ethical or moral mistake that humans can make Dr. Newman finds a corollary mistake in healthcare. Where we spend the fewest dollars—on primary and preventive care—we get the most in terms of lives saved. But where we spend the most—on hospital rescue care and hyped care—we get little to nothing in terms of lives saved and a shocking number of lives lost. Dr. Don Newman discovers that—from the perspective of basic human values—U.S. allocation of healthcare resources is completely upside down. The illustration was designed by Dr. Bailey and executed by artist Joel Hilgenberg with the assistance of Kim Coleman. \n  \n
